Favignana and the Egadi Islands at a glance

The Egadi Islands (Isole Egadi in Italian) lie off the west coast of Sicily. Favignana is the main island, with the port where boats arrive and bikes are rented. Levanzo and Marettimo are the smaller islands further out. All three are reached by boat from Trapani, and some hydrofoils also run from Marsala.

The waters around the islands form the Egadi Islands marine protected area, so rules for boats and anchoring apply. Excursion operators know them, and if you hire a boat yourself, ask for the local rules first. This is an independent guide, not the official tourism site.

Landing fee and cars

Landing fee. Passengers arriving on Favignana, Levanzo or Marettimo by scheduled or commercial services pay a landing fee (contributo di sbarco) to the municipality of Favignana. Trips between the islands are exempt, as are residents, owners, commuters, workers and minors up to 12. In 2022 the high-season rate from 1 June to 30 September was €5 for Favignana and €2.50 for Levanzo and Marettimo. Some ticket sellers include the fee in the fare, so confirm the amount when you book.

Cars. Favignana has restricted the vehicles of non-residents in high season. In 2025 the restriction ran from 15 June to 30 September, with exceptions for house owners staying at least 6 days. Check the current rules with your accommodation before you bring a vehicle. A bike from the port is the usual alternative.

Bikes on Favignana

Rentals sit right at the port. Typical daily rates from rental platforms are about €19 for a city or trekking bike (€13 to €23), about €38 for an e-bike (€32 to €44) and about €53 for an e-mountain bike. August is the peak month, so book ahead then. A Fiat Panda comes to about €33 per day on comparison sites.

Sea temperatures on the Trapani and Egadi coast, from model data, average about 23 °C in June, 26 °C in July, 27 °C in August, 25 °C in September and 23.5 °C in October. For the full picture, see the weather guide.

Planning a day trip or a stay

In the winter timetable the first hydrofoil leaves Trapani at 06:50 and the last one back leaves Favignana at 20:20. That makes a long day trip possible. If you stay a night or more, you are not tied to the last boat.

Levanzo and Marettimo. Levanzo has 11 hydrofoil departures from Trapani in the winter timetable, from 06:50 to 19:30, and Marettimo has four, at 08:45, 12:25, 15:30 and 18:00. The Siremar ferry also calls at Levanzo, and one of its routes continues to Marettimo. The landing fee applies on both islands, and trips between the islands are exempt.

Trapani is 106 km (about 1 h 27) from Palermo and 88 km (about 1 h 24) from Palermo Airport by road, and it has its own guide with the cable car, salt pans and Mozia. San Vito lo Capo is 37 km from Trapani. A 10-day route can combine both, see the Sicily itinerary.
